Shock Flashcards
What is shock?
Heart is unable to exert adequate pressure to circulate enough oxygenated blood to vital organs.
-systematic shutdown of body
Risk factors of shock:
injury extreme fatigue extreme exposure to elements dehydration illness
Reaction of the body due to shock?
Blood flow is shunted (direct or divert) from extremities to major organs
Signs and Symptoms of shock
Cool, clammy skin rapid, weak pulse nausea vomiting disoriented/confused decreased blood pressure
How to manage a patient with shock?
Any life threatening injuries? If so, activate EMS
Elevate legs (if no spinal injury)
control any bleeding
maintain airway and monitor vitals
Give warming blanket to keep athlete warm
What is hypovolemic shock?
trauma resulting in loss of fluids
not enough blood circulation in organs which in turn results in a lack of oxygen to organs
What is hemorrhagic shock?
Trauma resulting in blood loss (internal bleeding)
What is anaphylactic shock?
Shock resulting from an allergic reaction.
edema or swelling in airway, leads to loss of breathing
Epinephrine pen is handy in case of episode.
What is septic shock?
shock from severe infection (appendicitis)
Triggers chemical mediators which results in a loss of fluid.
What is neurogenic shock?
shock from trauma to the autonomous nervous system (ANS). causes the vessels to dilate.
What is cardiogenic shock?
shock from heart not functioning properly (injury may mess with electrical rhythm of heart which causes contractions)
What is hypoglycemic shock?
Yes; occurs from low blood sugar and a coma is possible, could be fatal.
What is psychogenic shock?
shock from sudden emotional state.
Should shock be taken as a serious medical emergency?
YES! Shock can be fatal to anybody. EMS must be activated immediately and symptoms should be treated right away.
Monitoring vitals is imperative.
