How many vertebrae are there?
33 vertebrae: 7 cervical 12 thoracic 5 lumbar Sacrum and Coccyx
MOI to neck injuries:
axial loading, excessive flexion/extension, rotation, excessive lateral bending (all can result in cervical fractures/dislocations)
Cervical Fractures:
MOI: axial loading, loading with rotation.
point tender over spinous process, weakness, sensation, paralysis, deformity
Assessing a cervical fracture/dislocation
is the athlete conscious? do they have feeling?
If victim’s body/limbs are in full extension and hands are flexed:
suspect cervical injury
When spine boarding an athlete with cervical injury
Keep the head stabilized at all time, use a cervical collar 6 people should be spine boarding.
If the athlete is prone:
log roll onto spine board & maintain head stabilization
