Palpations detect:
Temp Swelling Point Tenderness Crepitus Deformity Muscle Spasm Cutaneous Sensation Pulse
When palpating
Wash hands before.
Work away from site of pain and than gradually work your way closer.
Start gentle and work deeper.
Decreased circulation means
decreased body temperature

Always palpate
BILATERALLY
The first thing to rule out when palpating is
fractures. (fractures first- FF)
Stress tests indicates
ligament damage
Only remove athletes clothing/equipment if
cerebrospinal injury, bleeding or fx are ruled out.
A rapid and strong pulse may indicate:
heatstroke, high blood pressure, hyperglycemia.
Rapid and weak pulse may indicate
shock, internal bleeding
Slow and strong pulse may indicate
head/brain injury, drug use or stroke.
List three ways of transportation and describe each
- Ambulatory Assistance: arms over shoulders (one or two helpers) allow for athlete to not use so much weight on extremity, walk off easier.
- Manual Conveyance: wheel chair/sports chair or certain amount of people create a chair with arms and carry off athlete
- Spine board: secure athlete to a spine board. usually done with 6-8 people. Transport athlete off with a gator.
