List the parts of the tooth and describe each
Crown: Portion protruding from gum
Root: portion of tooth within the gum
Pulp: chamber containing blood vessels and nerves
What is the strongest substance the body makes?
Enamel
What is a uncomplicated crown fracture?
Tooth fracture, not exposing the nerve ending (pulp)
What is a complicated crown fracture?
Tooth fracture, nerve ending may be exposed (pulp)
What is a root fracture?
fracture involving all parts of tooth. Bleeding and might see line of root at gum line
How to manage a crown fracture?
hold onto broken piece, athlete can continue to play.
How to manage a root fracture?
Refer to a dentist ASAP
Tooth subluxation is:
tooth feels loose, but is still in position
S&S of tooth sublux:
pain and possible bleeding
Management of tooth sublux:
refer to dentist within 48 hrs, will usually resolve on its own.
What is a tooth luxation?
Tooth is loose, pushed forward, backward or intruded. Same S&S as subluxation
Management of tooth luxation?
Move tooth to normal position if possible. If intruded, leave tooth alone
Refer to dentist
What is a tooth avulsion?
Tooth is completely removed from gum.
Management for tooth avulsion:
rinse tooth with milk or saline and do not rub tooth!
Hold the tooth by the crown, not root.
If possible, place tooth in socket.
Succession rate of tooth reinsertion?
90% successful if performed within 30 minutes. After 2 hours, 95% failure.
