Breathing Emergencies Flashcards
Difference between respiratory distress and respiratory arrest?
RD- difficulty breathing
RA- no action of breathing
Function of cilia in nose:
filter out fine particles of debris (dust)
Air flows from ____ pressure to ____ pressure
high; low
Inhalation:
diaphragm and external intercostals (muscle) contracts, expands chest cavity
Exhalation:
Diaphragm and external intercostals (muscle) relax, chest cavity compresses
Tachypnea:
rapid breathing, >24 bpm
Bradypnea
slow breathing, <12 bpm
If pt is wheezing:
might be an obstruction in airway
Causes of respiratory distress:
Asthma
Bronchitis
Pnuemonia
Pnuemothorax
Triggers of respiratory distress
Allergens Stress Anxiety Smoke Cold Temps Exercise
What position causes breathing problems?
Laying down
If respiratory arrest occurs
Begin rescue breathing, use a barrier. 2 ventilations every 5 seconds.
What is a stoma?
airway opening in trachea
If facial trauma
mouth to nose rescue breathing.
