Bones in face:
frontal, parietal, sphenoid, nasal, zygomatic, maxilla and mandible
MOI to an orbital fracture is usually
a direct blow to the eye, fractures orbital bone
Signs and symptoms of orbital fx
Pain with eye movement (only one eye moves)
discoloration (concussion symptoms?)
Diplopia - double vision***
Zygomatic fractures:
direct hit to zygo bone.
S&S of zygomatic fx:
deformity
diplopia
numbness
may require surgery
Nasal fractures:
directly hit or elbow at side
S&S of nasal fx:
bleeding
deformity
difficulty breathing
crepitus
What is epistaxis?
a nosebleed. tilt head forward (not backward!!) ice at back of neck, pressure at base of nose
What causes a jaw dislocation?
direct blow to jawline
S&S of jaw dislocation
difficulty talking, unable to bite down
swelling
pain and deformity
What is an auricular hematoma?
Cauliflower ear; friction between cartilage and skin (hematoma)
If untreated, may be fibrotic (thick scar tissue)
S&S of auricular hematoma?
ear will burn, fluid sac
Tympanic Membrane Rupture?
ear drum rupture
caused by a direct blow to ear, infection, pressure, or loud noise (aggressive vibration)
Detached Retina?
“curtain over eye”
caused by blow to head w/ or without trauma
S&S of detached retina:
flashes of light
