Bone Flashcards

1
Q

What is the difference between cortical and cancellous bone?

A

Cortical bone is low porosity, very stiff, withstand stress, does not withstand strain

Cancellous bone is high porosity, spongy, and can withstand sprain

Q

Describe bone healing

A

Inflammatory process initiates at injury site. Osteoclasts resorb fractures bone, osteoblasts begin process of making new bone.
Weak bone is created and gets stronger as stress and use is applied. Must be in good alignment for 100% recovery.

Q

Complications in bone growth/healing?

A

Avascular Necrosis
Osteoarthritis
Myositis Ossificans

17
Q

Small bone healing time length

A

2-3 weeks

18
Q

Large bone healing time length

A

4-6 weeks

19
Q

Composition of bone?

A

Calcium carbonate
Calcium phosphate
Collagen
Water

20
Q

Epiphyseal Plates contribute to bone growth?

A

If the plates are open, bone growth occurs
Osteoblasts create bone
Osteoclasts breakdown bone.
