Bone Flashcards
What is the difference between cortical and cancellous bone?
Cortical bone is low porosity, very stiff, withstand stress, does not withstand strain
Cancellous bone is high porosity, spongy, and can withstand sprain
What are the classifications of bone injuries?
Fracture: disruption in continuity of bone
Partial vs. Complete
Displaced vs. nondisplaced
Closed vs. Open
What is the female athlete triad?
Disordered eating pattern —> amennhoria—> osteoporosis
Define avulsion fracture.
piece of bone is pulled away by a muscle or a ligament
Define comminuted fracture
pieces of bone fractured off caused by compression or impact
Define depressed fracture
an inward displacement of bone
Define displaced fracture
separated or not in alignment (significant deformity, shortened limb)
Define greenstick fracture
bending of a bone (found in younger athletes)
Define impacted fracture
bones are compacted together (burst fracture)
Define longitudinal fracture
fracture that runs the length of the bone.
Define spiral fracture
fracture that lines around the bone
Define oblique fracture
fracture that is angled to the bone
What is an epiphyseal fracture?
A fracture at the epiphyseal plate of a bone (Type 1-5)
What is a stress fracture?
repetitive use to a bone, not common.
Describe bone healing
Inflammatory process initiates at injury site. Osteoclasts resorb fractures bone, osteoblasts begin process of making new bone.
Weak bone is created and gets stronger as stress and use is applied. Must be in good alignment for 100% recovery.
