What is SHIPHAZ
SHIPHAZ is the regulations for any hazardous jobs on ship that requires precautions involving isolation g machinery and equipment such as working ALOFT or DIVERS DOWN. SHIPHAZ jobs are approved by the OOD/OOW and all details of the job are logged on a hazard board.
What is permits to work?
A permit to work is a regulation allowing personal to conduct a hazardous job that requires precautions and control measures, it is a safe practise of work and reduces the risk of injury or harm to the personal. PTW must be raised before conducting a hazardous job and must be approved by appointed authorities
What is divers down?
When divers goes beneath the stop to conduct various jobs and tasks. It involves using SHIPHAZ and multiple precautions to ensure the safety of the divers.
What are the divers down precautions?
Ship steering isolated
Ship stabilisers off
CPP disabled
Sonars turned off
All underwater discharging near area isolated
Shaft break isolated
Cathodic protection disabled
What is working aloft?
Working aloft is when personal is working on the ships superstructure external to the ship.
What are the precautions for working aloft?
Sentry placed below with hard hat
Slip proof boots worn
In date safety harness worn and connected to ships structure
All tools secured to personnel
No loose objects on personnel
What is a confined space?
A confined space is an area that hasn’t been ventilated for 24h
Examples: FW tank, ballast tank, STP, gear cases, machinery sumps
What are the precautions before accessing a confined space?
Must be ventilated for 24h
Atmosphere must be monitored and if unsafe monitor again after 12h
space is cool
Gas free certificate raised
What are the precautions when working in confined space?
No smoking
must be fit for job
sentry placed with EDBA and lifeline
Atmosphere monitored
Communications available
PPE
personal hygiene
