What are some non physiological forms of sexual dysfunction?
Psychological: interpsychic and intrapsychic
Social: situational
What are three examples of female sexual dysfunctions?
Sexual interest/arousal disorder; female orgasmic disorder; genito-pelvic pain (dyspareunia)
What are some examples of male sexual dysfunction? (4)
male hypoactive sexual desire disorder; delayed ejaculation; erectile disorder; premature ejaculation
What can cause low libido?
Psychological: fatigue, situational, depression
Physical: hypothyroidism, hypogonadism, partial androgen deficiency in ageing male
Other: medication
How does an erection occur?
- Stimuli causes NO to be released, which in turn increases cGMP in certain areas of the penis
- cGMP causes SM relaxation of erectile tissues, and arterial expansion. Increased blood flow to corpus cavernosum. Veins are compressed
- phosphodiesterase breaks down cGMP to limit erection
How is erectile dysfunction characterised?
Persistent inability for at least 3 months to obtain or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual performance.
What are some PDE5 inhibitors?
Sildenafil (viagra), tadalafil (cialis), vardenafil (levitra)
