Sex steroid drugs: Flashcards
levonorgestrel
up to 72 hours post-coitus.
ullipristal acetate
up to 120 hours post-coitus.
oestradial
stimulates breast and endometrial growth, stimulates production of progesterone receptors, decreases bone reabsorption, increases HDL levels, increases sodium and water retention and impairs glucose tolerance.
medoxyprogesterone
stimulates breast and endometrial growth, maintains pregnancy, inhibits production of oestrogen receptors, fluid retention and mood changes.
testosterone
stimulates male secondary characteristics, increased aggression, promotes hair growth and voice changes.
COCP
oestrogen inhibits FSH and progesterone inhibits LH, thus suppressing ovulation. progesterone also creates a thick cervical mucus hostile for sperm and implantation.
POP
thickens cervical mucus to prevent sperm entry.
Clomiphene
inhibits oestrogen binding in anterior pituitary, thus inhibiting the negative feedback needed for ovulation.
tamoxifen
binds to oestrogen receptors in the breast, to prevent cell division.
mifepristone
partial agonist of progesterone, blocks receptors.
raloxifene
oestrogen receptor modulator, acts on bone to cause oestrogenic effects, thus protecting against osteoporosis.
