Sepsis Flashcards
What is sepsis
A life threatening condition that arises when the bodys response to infection injures its own tissue and organs
What is the pathophysiology of sepsis
- A complex interaction with the immune system and the pathogen
- Inflammatory responce of vasodialtion, increases permeabiity and migration of WBC
- Dysregulation of haemostasis
- Endothelial barrier is compromised so the WBC can get to the tissue
- Hypotension due to vascular component reducting
- Anaerobic respiration due to hypoperfusion
What can hypotension and hypoperfusion of tissue result in
Organ damage
What are examples of organ damage
ARDS Cardiomyopathy AKI Cholestasis Caogulopathy Delirium Bone marrow supression Myopathy
What are the organisms that can cause sepsis
Bacteria
Viruses
Fungi
Parasite
Which bacteria is most common that can cause sepsis
Bacteria
What are the common sources of sepsis
Pneumonia Meningitis Bloodstream infection Skin or soft tissue infection Catheter related infection UTI
On a NEWS score scale, which score suggests sepsis
Above 5
What features does the person have to suspect sepsis
Possible sepsis
Circulatory compromise/ unexplained deterioration
