Bacterial Infections Flashcards
What are the causes of infectios disease by organisms
Ectoparasites Helminth Protoza Virus Fungi Bacteria Prions
What are ectoparasites
Parasites that live on the skin and is large
What are the sites in the body where bacteria are not present
Blood CSF Urine Peritoneal fluid Pleural fluid
Does the presence of bacteria in the previous sites indicate infection
No it can be contamination
What are the ways in which bacteria can cause disease
- Direct effects
- Exotocin production and effects on human tissue
- Pathogenic activation of immune system
What are the direct effects of bacteria
Rupture
Organ blockage
Pressure
Cell destruction
What are the types of bacteria
- Some bacteria are always pathogenic
- Some bacteria are part of the normal flora that can acquire virulenec factors making it pathogenic
- Some bacteria cause disease when they gain access to deep tissues
- Some normally non pathogenic bacteria can cause dsease in immunocompromised patients
Name a bacteria that is always pathogenic
M tuberculosis
Name bacteria that is part of the normal flora but can acquire virulence factors
E colo
Staph aureus
N meningitids
Name bacteria that can cause disease when they have acess to deep tissue
Staph epidermidis
Name non pathogenic bacteria that can cause disease in immunocompromised people
Acinetobacter
How do we decide if a bacteria is causing an infection
By the kochs postulate
What does the kochs postulate include
- pathogen is present in every case of disease
- pathogen must be isolated from diseased person and grow in a pure culture
- specific disease must be reproduced when inoculated into a healthy host
- pathogen must be recoverabe from the experimentally infected host
How commonly are bacteria classified
Gram negative or gram positive
Rods or cocci
What are the types of bacteria that are culturable
Gram negative rods
Gram negative cocci
Gram positive rods
Gram positive cocci
