What is the aim of Retribution and punishment ?
To show the victim is being avenged by society and the offender deserves what they are getting
What is deterrence ?
Fear of punishment that stops most people from committing crime
What is the aim of reform and rehabilitation ?
The hope that the offenders behaviour will be altered throughout the enforced penalty
What is reparation ?
An objective aimed at compensating the victim
What are the types of custodial sentences ?
Fixed term
Discretionary life sentence
Mandatory life sentence
Suspension
What is a fixed term ?
4 years sentence
What is a discretionary life sentence ?
Where the judge gives a minimum term after which the offender can apply for parole
What is a mandatory life sentence ?
The minimum of a life sentence
What is a suspension ?
Where the offender is given up to 12 months to comply with the conditions of their sentence
What is an absolute discharge ?
No punishment, as the court process is punishment enough
What is a conditional discharge ?
Where there is no punishment given unless they reoffend
What is an aggravating factor ?
Making the situation worse
What is a mitigating factor ?
Making the situation better
