What is the purpose of the council of the European union ?
Heads of Gov from each Ms meet at council / summit to discuss matters of broad policy
Main decision making body in the EU
What is the purpose of the European comission ?
Each MS has 1 representative, appointed for a 5 year term to be responsible for a single area of eu policy
What is the purpose of European Parliament ?
Members form political groups often with those with similar views and meet once a month to consult on proposed legislation
What is the purpose of the European court of justice ?
To ensure Ms’s interpret and apply EU law appropriately
What are some sources of eu law ?
Treaties
Directives
Regulations
What is vertical direct effect ?
Idea that an individual affected by an ms not implementing a law can make a claim
What is horizontal direct affect ?
Individuals cannot hold others to account if an MS haven’t implemented a law
What did the case of Duke v GEC reliance LTD (1998) establish ?
That eu law does not have horizontal direct effect
