Senses Flashcards
What does the skin contain receptors for?
The skin contains receptors for pain, touch and
temperature.
What are the taste receptors?
Sweet
Sour
Unami
Salty
Bitter
What role does the nose have in detecting senses?
The nose contains receptors that respond to particular
chemicals in the air.
What is the function of the sclera?
White of the eye that is tough and doesn’t let light through
What is the function of the conjunctiva?
Clear thin membrane covering the front of the eye that
lubricates and protects. If it gets inflamed its called
conjunctivitis
What is the function of the cornea?
Transparent part of the sclera which is curved which bends light towards the retina.
What is the function of the choroid?
Layer between Sclera and Retina. It Contains blood vessels to nourish the eye.
What is the function of the aqueous humour?
Watery substance that gives the front of the eye its shape
What is the function of the vitreous humour?
Gel like substance that maintains the shape of the eye.
What is the function of the iris?
Coloured part of the eye which controls the amount of light entering the eye
What is the function of the lens?
Changes shape to focus light on the retina.
What is the function of the pupil?
It controls the amount of light entering the eye
What is the function of the retina?
Rods And cones are located here
What do rods do?
Detect black and white colours and work in dim light
Found all over the retina
What do cones do?
Detect colours and work in bright light
Found mostly at the fovea
What is the blind spot?
The point where nerve fibres leave the eye is called the blind
spot as there are no rods and cones to receive light.
What is the function of the pinna?
Channels vibrations into the auditory canal.
What is the function of the auditory canal?
Carries vibrations to the eardrum.
What is the function of the eardrum?
Vibrates when vibrations reach it and separates the outer ear from the middle ear
What is the function of the ossicles?
3 small bones that transmit
and amplify vibrations from
the outer ear to inner ear.
What is the function of the Eustachian tube?
Equalises pressure on either side of the eardrum.
What is the function of the cochlea?
Vibrations arrive at the cochlea from the stirrup, pass through
the oval window and create waves of pressure in the fluid in
the cochlea (lymph).
Hairs attached to sensory cells are stimulated, with and
impulse travelling along the organ of corti and onto the brain
via the auditory nerve.
What is the function of the semi-circular canals?
The semi-circular canals contain a lymph fluid. They also
contain receptor cells which are stimulated depending on the
movement of the fluid.
These receptors send impulses via the vestibular nerve to
the cerebellum which can then interpret the position of the
head in space.
What are the ossicles bones?
(Hammer, Anvil & Stirrup)
