Q

how is lymph transported?

A

Lymph is transported in lymph vessels in the same way that blood is transported in veins.

Q

how is lymph returned to the blood?

A

Valves ensure lymph only moves in one direction towards the
thoracic duct on the left side of the body and the right
lymphatic duct at the right shoulder.

These ducts then empty into the bloodstream at the
subclavian vein.

Q

what is the function of lymph nodes?

A

Found in clusters called glands (tonsils).

They fight infection by:
-Filtering bacteria from the lymph.
-Maturing and storing white blood cells

Q

what are the functions of lymph?

A

Defence:

Filtering microorganisms (bacteria)
Maturing and storing WBC’s
Destroying microorganisms
Help hearing and balance
Swollen glands are actively fighting infection.

Q

How is lymph formed?

A

When blood is pumped by the heart under high pressure, some plasma leaks out of the capillaries and into the space around the cells.

This is called extra – cellular fluid/tissue fluid as it is outside the cells, it is similar to plasma but does not contain blood cells.

90% of this fluid is removed from space around cells and returned to the blood by osmosis through the capillaries.

10% enters the lymph vessels and is then called Lymph. Lymph moves through the vessels by muscular action of the vessel walls.
