Blood Flashcards
Blood is composed of:
Blood is composed of:
Plasma
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Platelets
What is plasma?
Plasma is the liquid part of the blood.
what is plasma made up of?
It is approximately:
90% water
7% proteins
3% dissolved substances.
what is the function of plasma?
The function of plasma is transport.
It transports dissolved materials like glucose, vitamins, minerals, and hormones.
It transports wastes including urea, salts and CO₂.
Plasma also transports heat. It is involved in homeostasis.
what is the function of red blood cells
joins with oxygen to form oxyhaemoglobin
transports oxygen
what shape are red bood cells
biconcave
why are red blood cells biconcave
increases their surface area for oxygen absorption
what body cavity would you find the heart in
chest
in what ways does lymph differ from blood
no red blood cells
no platelets
no proteins for clotting
no mitochondria
are red blood cells flexible
yes
what is the oxygen carrying molecules in red blood cells
haemoglobin
where are red blood cells made?
They are made in the bone marrow of long bones.
why do red blood cells not live long?
When first created, red blood cells have a nucleus. When they mature, the nucleus dies.
As a result, red blood cells are unable to repair themselves and live for only four months (approx.).
They contain no mitochondria and do not respire.
where are red blood cells broken down
Red blood cells are broken down in the liver and spleen.
name things transported in the blood
urea
hormones
antibodies
oxygen
co2
proteins
enzymes
what is the function of white blood cells
White blood cells fight infection.
what is the composition of blood
plasma 55%
blood cells 45%
ph = 7.4
where are white blood cells formed?
in bone marrow and mature in lymph system
do white blood cells have a nucleus/
yes
what are the types of wbc
lymphocytes 25% of wbc and monocytes
what do monocytes do/
engulf bacteria and dead cells - phagocytosis
what do lymphocytes do
produce antibodies in response to the presnse of bacteria or viruses
which are the largest wbc?
monocytes
what is the function of platelets
blood clotting
Blood clotting prevents the entry of foreign cells and pathogens into the body.
Clotting forms scabs on wounds, which reduces the risk of infection.
