Sensation, Perception and Action Flashcards
Sensation?
The process by which sensory receptor neurones detect information and transmit it to the brain.
Perception?
The interpretation of a sensory input.
Action?
Motor activities prompted by sensory and/or perceptual information.
Affordance?
Refers to the potential actions or uses that an object, environment, or situation provides to an individual, based on its properties and the individual’s capabilities.
Methods for assessing infant participation?
Habituation, Preferential Looking, Evoked Potentials, Operant Conditioning.
What process is followed by the emergence of motor skills?
Cephalocaudal
What does Thelen’s Dynamic System Theory say?
Children use sensory feedback they receive when they try different movements to gradually modify their motor behaviour in adaptive ways.
Cross modal perception?
To recognise through one sense an object familiar through another sense.
Attention?
The focusing of perception and cognition on something particular.
Orienting vs. Focusing system?
Orienting reacts to events in the environment.
Focusing deliberately seeks out and maintains attention to events
