Memory and Learning (7) Flashcards
Synaptic consolidation
The process by which connections are strengthened within minutes and hours after learning to retain a memory of the event or new info.
Working memory?
Short term memory used to achieve a goal.
Episodic buffer?
Component of working memory that links auditory and visual info.
Explicit memory?
Tested through traditional recognition and recall tests.
Divided into semantic (general facts) and episodic memory (specific memories)
Implicit memory?
Unintentionally, automatically and without awareness.
Classical conditioning?
A stimulus that initially had no effect on an individual comes to elicit a response though its association with a stimulus that already elicits a response (Pavlov’s bell).
Operant conditioning?
A learner’s behaviour becomes more or less probable depending on the consequences it produces.
Negative reinforcement, Positive reinforcement, negative punishment, positive punishment.
Social Cognitive Theory?
Bandura.
Humans are cognitive beings whose active processing of information plays a critical role in their learning behaviour and development.
Observational learning.
Metamemory?
Knowledge and control over one’s memory.
Metacognition?
Knowledge of what you know and how you learn, as well as being able to monitor the process involved in thinking.
Selective Optimisation with Compensation?
Strategy for older adults to cope with and compensate for their diminishing cognitive resources.
Siegler’s adaptive strategy choice model?
Cognitive developmental theory that explains how children and individuals adaptively choose among different strategies to solve problems.
