What are ‘semantics’?
Semantics are the study of meaning (of words) in language.
What is a ‘semantic field’?
It is a group of words that fulfil the same kind of role and function in speech and writing. eg. Spray, Brush, Wipe is a semantic field of sanitising.
What are ‘collocates’?
They are words that typically appear together. eg. Stomach Ache, Toilet Roll, Water Bottle.
What are ‘fixed expressions’?
They are a well-used group of words that becomes accepted and used as one long structure. eg. See you later, On my way, Fancy a cup?
What is a ‘synonym’?
It is a word or phrase that has equivalent meaning to another word, basically same literal meaning.
What is a ‘euphemism’?
It is a more socially acceptable word or phrase to describe the situation somewhat discreetly.
What is a ‘dysphemism’?
Using a blunt or direct word instead of a more polite or indirect alternative, close to taboo.
Give an example of a synonym for “She’s lost her job”.
“She doesn’t work there anymore”.
Give an euphemism for “He’s dead”.
“He’s in a better place”.
Give a dysphemism for “They had sex”.
They slept together.
What are ‘antonyms’?
They are words that have opposite meanings.
What are words with COMPLETE opposite meanings?
Complementary antonyms.
What is a ‘Hyponymy’?
It is a way of viewing the relationship(s) between more general and specific words.
Give an example of a hyponymy for ‘Laptop’.
Electronics
v
Hardware
v
Computer
v
Laptop
What are ‘conceptual metaphors’?
It is the way in which abstract terms are mapped onto physical entities through an underlying conceptual structure.
eg. Love is a journey
- Look how far we’ve come.
- We’ll have to go our separate ways.
- I don’t think this relationship is going anywhere.
