Define ‘pragmatics’.
Pragmatics is the use of context behind words due to how we interpret language.
What are Schemas?
Schemas are bundles or a load of information built up from personal experience which causes people to have different views on some things. However, these Schemas can also share common properties despite them being completely unique to individuals leading to an agreement.
What is embodied knowledge?
It is the knowledge of something that associates with memories of someone’s physical experience.
What is a co-text?
Co-text are words or phrases that surround a schema (text).
For example, when I think of The United Kingdom, the first thing to come is royalty.
What is a reference?
It is a noun used to refer to a person due to particular hobbies or anything it correlates to.
What is an inference?
It is a process where additional information is needed to connect to what is literally meant.
What is antecedent and Anaphora?
Antecedent is the first mention of a noun and anaphora is the second and any subsequent reference to the antecedent but not directly pointing it out as the noun but as one of the deixis from the dietic categories.
What is Presupposition?
It is when speakers articulate their (linguistic) messages on the basis of assumptions about what the listener(s) already know.
When we analyse a text through ‘Semantic Analysis’ what do we mean?
Semantic analysis is the literal meaning given from that form of text.
When we analyse a text through ‘Pragmatic Analysis’ what do we mean?
Pragmatic analysis is analysing what is not literally said but what can/is implied.
