self report (1) Flashcards
response rate
amount of responses received after questionnaires sent out to participants
open question
produce qualitative data
usually longer answer Qs
closed question
produce quantitative data
usually one word answers or numbers
closed Q advantages
easier to interpret
can turn into quantitative data
comparable
quick to answer
closed Q disadvantages
no reasoning
forces answer that may not be true
less detailed
open Q advantages
reasoning qualitative data wide range of answers doesn't force answer detailed
open Q disadvantages
hard to interpret
hard to compare
time consuming to answer/interpret
rating scales advantages
quick/easy
comparable
repeated easily
rating scales disadvantages
interpret differently
no reasoning
people choose middle to not seem extreme
semantic differentials
rating scales based on opposites e.g big - - - small
likert scales
statements with different levels e.g e.agree/agree/meh/dis/e.dis
semantic differentials advantages
more visual
less likely to have standard response set
semantics differentials disadvantages
interpretation
no reasoning
structured interview
prepared
same Qs for all participants
often closed Q
semi structured interview
some prepared Qs
some Qs developed as interview goes on based on responses
unstructured interview
researcher has topics but no Qs
more like a conversation
structured interview strengths
prepared
easy to compare
internally reliable (standardised)
structured interview weakness
closed answers
no follow up Qs
semi structured interview strengths
qualitative + quantitative
follow up Qs
semi structured interview weakness
harder to compare
less reliable
unstructured interview strengths
lots of qualitative
participant feels more comfortable
unstructured interview weakness
time consuming low internal reliability hard to summarise cant compare could be awkward
questionnaires strengths
both open and closed
a lot done quickly / efficient
easy to conduct
confidential
questionnaires weakness
no follow ups
low response rate
interviews strengths
follow ups
no response rate
read body language
interviews weakness
1 at a time - time consuming / inefficient
harder to conduct
not confidential
split half reliability
questions are split into even and odd and given to participants separately to ensure both halves are contributing equally to measuring the aim
test - retest reliability
when a questionnaire is repeated with some people, similar results mean better external reliability
nominal data
a ‘headcount’ of number of participants who do one thing as opposed to another
ordinal data
the rank order in which data can be placed. Results placed highest to lowest
interval/ratio data
.similar to ordinal data but will take into account how much higher/lower each individual result is
.interval can go into negatives (e.g temperature) - ratio can’t (e.g distance)
