Self Perception + Self Esteem Flashcards
What is self-esteem?
How we feel about who we are, the evaluating component of the self
What is the self-concept?
This is how we view ourselves as opposed to how we feel about ourselves
What did Harter’s model of self esteem show?
5 key domains of competency were found: Scholastic competence Athletic competence Social acceptance Physical appearance Behavioral conduct
A correlation of 0.7 (r) was found between self-efficacy and high competency for important domains. Was only 0.3 for unimportant domains
what is subjectivity of importance?
This is key in having a high self-esteem. Those individuals who have a high self-esteem only perceive what they are competent at as important and disregard their inadequacies.
Why can subjectivity of importance sometimes be a problem?
Due to outside influences eg. Peers, family and social influence
What was considered the most important domain in Harter’s model for predicting self-efficacy?
Physical appearance, had a correlation of 0.7-0.8 because of these factors:
PA is always on display
Others respond more positively to those considered attractive
Society emphasizes PA from early age
What correlation was found between physical competence and self-esteem?
0.14-0.4 meaning people care more about how they look
What did fox and Corbin (1989) find?
A correlation of 0.6? between global self-esteem and physical self worth (comprised of various sub-domains)
What did whitehead and Corbin (1997) find?
Males rate themselves higher than females on all sub scales
As females get older, their perceptions of PA decline, this does not occur in males
For Females PA is more important than competence
