Self-efficacy Flashcards
What is self-efficacy?
Ones belief of their own skills, situation specific self-confidence
How would self efficacy affect how we think?
A high self-efficacy results in less worrying and attributing success internally
When is self-efficacy the greatest predictor of performance?
If someone has both the skills required and the motivation needed
What did Moritz et al (2000) find? (Self-efficacy)
Found a correlation of 0.38 between self-efficacy and sporting performance
What are the 4 sources of self-efficacy?
Performance accomplishments
Vicarious experiences
Verbal persuasion
Emotional arousal
What are some factors that affect the effectiveness in regards to performance accomplishments?
How the experience is perceived/ perceived difficulty
Amount of guidance received
What type of relationship is there between performance accomplishments and self-efficacy?
A reciprocal relationship
Eg.make task easier to ensure success to increase SE
What factors affect vicarious experiences?
The competency of the model and the similarity of the model to the observer
What did Lirgg and Feltz (1991) find? (Self-efficacy)
That viewing a more skilled model resulted in higher self efficacy after a task alongside better performance on the task compared to a control
What does the effectiveness of verbal persuasion depend upon?
The credibility of the person doing the persuading, the prestige and trustworthiness of the persuader
What did Hatzigeorgiadis (2008) find?
Showed that using self-talk during tennis improved both self-efficacy and performance compared to controls
What does emotional arousal depend upon?
Whether the individual associates arousal with fear or with being ready for performance
What did Feltz (1982) find in respect to emotional arousal?
That perceived arousal was a significant predictor for self-efficacy, however the psychological effects of arousal did not predict self-efficacy
What interventions can be used to improve self-efficacy?
Goal-setting - must be realistic and challenging
Feedback - positive feedback raises SE
Coaches should encourage imagery and positive self-talk
