Self Efficacy Theory: Fulfills Goal Attainment Flashcards
What is the definition?
Albert Bandura (Moore, 87, 103)
A Theory that Facilitates Goal Attainment
> “I believe I can do it” A client’s perceived ability to successfully achieve a particular goal or perform a particular task
> SE precedes self-determination…‘I am going to…’ SE describes the circular relationship between belief and action; the more believe you can do something, the more likely you are to do it
What are the acronyms/skills/needs?
4 Sources of Self-Efficacy:
> physiological/affective states - becoming physically & emotionally comfortable with the prospect of change > verbal persuasion - communication of confidence in a client’s ability to reach vision & achieve goals
> vicarious experiences - witnessing & relating to others who are trying to do / reach similar goals that they are
> mastery experiences - quick wins / positive outcomes lead to increased self-efficacy.
What are the principles?
Self-Efficacy Principles:
Self-efficacy refers to an individual’s belief in his or her capacity to execute behaviors necessary to produce specific performance attainments (Bandura, 1977, 1986, 1997). Self-efficacy reflects confidence in the ability to exert control over one’s own motivation, behavior, and social environment.
