What is the definition?
> Activation emphasizes patients’ willingness & ability to take independent actions to manage their health & care: this equates patient activation with understanding one’s role in the care process and having the knowledge, skill & confidence to manage one’s health & health care > Engagement - broader concept to include activation: the interventions designed to increase activation; and patients’ resulting behavior, such as obtaining preventive care or engaging in regular physical exercise > The focus is on activation & engagement rather than compliance
What are the acronyms/skills/needs?
PA is based on 4 levels of patient beliefs of their health Level
1.Identify as passive recipients of care
Level2.
Beginning to learn how their behavior connects to a larger context of overall health, yet still unclear about basic health facts.
3.Actively building knowledge to manage health. They still lack the confidence and skills to maintain behaviors.
4.Take an active role to maintain health. They have the confidence and skill sets to successfully adopt new behavior, however, behavior may not be maintained under extreme stress.
What are the principles?
Randomized study showed that patient level of activation is linked to improved self-management of health behaviors, improved levels of patient activation, and lower healthcare costs.
