What is the definition?

A

> An approach to communication that is focused on expressing empathy (understanding /respecting where someone is coming from; recognizing the emotion for what it is, and appreciating what it has to teach us) – recognizing that an empathic connection can bring clients out, helping them acknowledge their feelings/needs,leading to deeper awareness for the client and more connected coaching relationship

What are the acronyms/needs/skills?

A

Make observations / not evaluations (limit what can be perceived by the 5 senses)
> Express feelings / not thoughts
> Identify needs / not strategies (more than the things we ‘can’t live without’ - represent values, wants, desires & preferences for a happier/more meaningful experience as a human
> Make requests / not demands - once clear about feelings & underlying needs, confirm understanding or agree on an action

What are the principles?

A

The four components of NVC are
Observations, Feelings, Needs and Requests. NVC deals with expressing honestly / receiving empathically through the four components.
The basics of Nonviolent Communication involve expressing ourselves with clarity, compassion, self-responsibility, empathy, and the common good in mind, which is the exact opposite of what violent communication is.
