Self Determination Theory Flashcards
What is the definition?
> Theory of motivation that addresses issues of extrinsic/intrinsic motivation; people have 3 innate psychological needs (Competence, Relatedness, Autonomy) - if met, in theory, people will function & grow optimally
A framework for understanding motivation that includes: competence, relatedness & autonomy > Extrinsic motivation - done because doing so will yield a ‘reward’ > Intrinsic motivation - done for the pure enjoyment/fun (yields deeper engagement, learning & persistence) > States that one needs autonomy, competence and relatedness in order to create intrinsic motivation and the ‘buy in’ to do something
self-efficacy…I believe I can…
self -determination… I am going to do it…one needs belief (self -efficacy) to say ‘I am going to.’
What are the acronyms/skills and needs?
Components of Self-determination: CAR
> Competence - confident/effective
> Autonomy - ability to make one’s own decisions for oneself; irrevocable right & capacity of self-direction
> Relatedness is the ability to feel a sense of both attachment to other people and a sense of belonging amongst other people and a force greater than oneself
> Relatedness can involve feelings of closeness and belonging to a social group. > Without connections, self-determination is harder to achieve because the individual would lack access to both help and support.
What are the principles?
Self-Determination Theory Principles
Self-determination theory suggests that people are motivated to grow and change by three innate and universal psychological needs. This theory suggests that people are able to become self-determined when their needs for competence, relatedness, and autonomy are fulfilled.
