Selective breeding Flashcards
1
Q
Think of deciding and controlling what happens
What is selective breeding?
A
- When animals/ plants with desired charcteristics are selected to reproduce togther
- To make offspring with desired charcteristics
2
Q
Think what is wanted
Describe how the process of selective breeding can be used in tomatoe plants or any other kind of plants.
A
- Choose the tomatoes (plants) with the desired (best) charcteristics
- Breed them togther
- Once breed let the plants grow then repeate the proccess with the tomatoes (plants) with the most desribale (best) yield
- Keep repeating the proccess to increase the average yield
3
Q
Give three examples of traits (charcteristics) that might be selectivly bred in plants or animals?
A
- Improved yield of meat or milk
- Drought resistence
- Improved yield of fruits, grains and vegtables
Also for animals the size, fur colour and aggression
Also for plants the colour of the flower
4
Q
Think about control and the effect it has
What effect does selective breeding usally have on a population?
A
- Reducues varioution in a population
5
Q
Think similar but not the same
What is inbreeding?
A
- Process where closely related individuals are mated togther
6
Q
Give three problems with inbreeding.
A
- Reduces gene pool
- Rare inherited disease are more likely to be expressed
- Population is more at risk of disease
