Selective breeding Flashcards

1
Q

Think of deciding and controlling what happens

What is selective breeding?

A

Q

Think what is wanted

Describe how the process of selective breeding can be used in tomatoe plants or any other kind of plants.

A
  • Choose the tomatoes (plants) with the desired (best) charcteristics
  • Breed them togther
  • Once breed let the plants grow then repeate the proccess with the tomatoes (plants) with the most desribale (best) yield
  • Keep repeating the proccess to increase the average yield

Q

Give three examples of traits (charcteristics) that might be selectivly bred in plants or animals?

A
  • Improved yield of meat or milk
  • Drought resistence
  • Improved yield of fruits, grains and vegtables

Also for animals the size, fur colour and aggression
Also for plants the colour of the flower

Q

Give three problems with inbreeding.

A
  • Reduces gene pool
  • Rare inherited disease are more likely to be expressed
