Characteristics of living organisms Flashcards
The seven things living organisums need
What are the eight life proccesses?
- Movment
- Respiration
- Sensitvity
- Growth
- Reproduction
- Excretion
- Nutrition
- Homeostasis
All living life proccess have these proccesses
If it does somthing does not have these life procceses it is either dead or non living (virusus)
What is movement?
Action by an organisums either changing posistion or place.
A human walking or a plant moving towards sun light
- Movemnet from place to place is called locomotion
- Movement in changing position is called oreientation
What is respiration?
A chemical reaction that realses energy
Energy is realsied from glucose in both aerobic and anerobic respiration
- Aerobic repsirtion- with oxygen
- Anerobic respiration- with out oxygen
Respiration is not breathing
What is sensitvity?
Detection and response to a stimili (chnage in surrondings)
* Nervous/ endocirne system- humans
* Geotropisum/ phototropisum- plants
Change in surroundings does not have to be moving from one place to aother it could be touching somthing hot and responding to that, or seeing a glass of water and reacting to teh thirst or plants responding to light.
What is growth?
Increase in size and complecity
Using materials from their food
What is reproduction?
Producing offspring
* Sexula-animals/ humans
* Asexula- plants
production of the same kind of organsum
What is excretion?
Removal of toxic (waste) materials from the body.
e.g.:
* Skin-Sweating
* Lungs- Carbon dioxide
* Kidenys- Urination
p- o
A chemical reaction that is described as a metobolic reaction. Metabolic reactions produce waste products (toxic).
What is nutrition?
Using/ needing food to provide energy
- Plants- Proccess of photosyntheisms carbon dioxide, water and sunlight
- Animals- conuming other living organisums
What is homeostasis?
Control their internal environment
To make sure that the conditions teh organisums needs is the right amoun
E.g.
* Theromoregulation- control of body temerature (humans (37c))
* Mechanisums- sweating or vasodillation (humans)
* Glucoregulation- control of blook glucose levels (humans)
* Osmoregulation- control of water levels (humans)
* Transpiration- manitaing a certain temperature (plants)
* Water evopratiing from stomata (plants)
