Q

It is poruing and things are cracking

What detrimental effect can sulfur dioxide have on the enviroment?

A
  • Can dissolve in water causing acid rain
  • Acid rain can erode buildings and pollute water sources

Sulfur dioxide is formed when fossil fuels with impurites are burned

What detrimental impact can carbon monoxide have on the enviroment?

A
  • Binds to haemoglobin preventing oxygen to be carried through the body
  • Too much exposure to carbon monoxide can cause unconsciosness and death

Carbon monoxide is formed from incomplete combustion of fossil fuels

Q

How do green house gases contribute to global warming?

A
  • Allow heat from the sun to enete rthe earths atmosphere
  • Gases act as a blanket trapping the heat in the atmosphere

Q

Describe how sewage in water ways afect aquatic life

A
  • Microrgansiums will decompose the sewage
  • They rapidly increase and use up the oxygen in the water for aerobic respiration
  • There is less oxygen in teh dissolved water so aquatic organsiums struggle for survial

Q

What is eutrophication?

A
  • Excess amount of nutrients in a body of water

This is usally because of fertillisers

Q

Why is eutrophication bad for aquatic life?

A
  • Increases nitrates in the water which increase the number of algae
  • Cause and algae bloom over the water surface
  • The algae cover the usns light from reaching water plants under the water
  • The plants die because iwthout light they cannot photosyntheisis
  • Microbes (like bacteria) increase decomposing the dead plants
  • The microbes use and reduce oxygen for aerobic respiraton
  • Causing low oxygen levels which affects the aqutic life which would probably die

If the situation is bad than the water area e.g. lake in the end could be completly empty

Q

State five negative effects of deforestaion

A
  • Leaching
  • Less CO2 being taken out of teh atmosphere because there are less plants doing photosyntheiss
  • Soil erosion
  • Habitat disruption
  • Disruption of the carbon cycle
