Prokaryotic organisms Flashcards
Somthing that eukaryotic organisums have that prokaryotic dont have
What does a prokaryotic organisum mean?
Are alawys single celled organisums that do not have a nucelus.
What organsium is prokaryotic?
Bacteria
is single celled and does not have a nucelus
Instead of the nucelar (nucelus) material (DNA) where would it be found in prokaryotic organiums (bacteria)?
In the cytoplasm
What are features of bacteria?
- Microscopic single celled organisums
- Have a cell wall made of peptidoglycan
- Circular chromosos of DNA
- Some feed by photosynthesis even though they do not have chloroplast they do have chlorphyll and enzymes needed for photosynthesis
- Majority feed on living or dead organisums
Do not have a nucleus, mitochondria and other membrane bound organels
Wide varity of shapes and sizes
Examples of bacteria:
* Lactobacillus (a rod-shaped bacterium used in the production of yoghurt from milk)
* Pneumococcus (a spherical bacterium that acts as the pathogen causing pneumonia)
If a bacteria feeds on dead organisums it is called saprobionst or decomposers
What is found in a bacteria cell?
- Circular loop of DNA
- Ribsomos
- Cytoplasm
- Cell membrane
- Cell wall made of peptidoglycan
- Plasmids (some)
- Flaggela (some)
Even though they have a cell wall it is not the same as plan cell wall
Plasmids are more gentic material found in some bacteria not all but majority of gentic material is found in the circular loop of DNA.
Flagela are string like things at the back of bacteria on teh outside which help it to move but only found in some bacteria not all.
