Caused by spontaneous excessive discharge of neurons
Seizures or convulsions
Seizures are caused by
Inflammation, hypoxia, or bleeding in the brain
Related to the particular site of the irritation
Focal
Often manifested by involuntary repetitive movements or abnormal sensations
Aura
Consciousness is lost and motor function impaired
Generalized
10 to 30 sec loss of consciousness with eyelid fluttering, abruptly stop activity
Absence seizures (petit mal)
Altering contaction and relaxation
Tonic-clonic (grand mal)
Twitching of a group of muscles, brief jerking of a limb
Myoclonic
Memory is retained, specific symptoms reflect part of the brain affected, e.g. tingling or numbness of a limb
Simple Partial
Impaired consciousness but have some awareness of environment, patient may stare, often preceded by an aura
Complex partial (psychomotor)
Increased metabolism of glucose and oxygen, May be life threatening, May persist for hours or days
Continuous seizures (status epilepticus)
