chronic, progressive disease characterized by destruction of myelin sheath of CNS neurons - onset usually begins at youg adulthood, rarely after age 60
Multiple Sclerosis
Believed to involve and immunologic mechanism - possible that viral infection causes a secondary immune response - possible genetic risk factors
Etiology of Multiple Sclerosis
Muscle weakness, paralysis, mood swings, visual disturbances - initial onset of symptoms may occur following acute infection, trauma, serum injections, pregnancy or stress
Signs and Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis
Neurological exam, CSF analysis, cranial CT and MRI scans
Diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis
Treatment is generally directed toward relieving symptoms and preventing futur attacks - avoid temperature extremes and stress - immunomodulators to prevent exacerbations
