Otitis Media Flashcards
Accumulation of fluid within the middle ear - The seroud form exhibits a clear, sterile fluid - pus-producing bacteria cause the suppurative form
Otitis Media
Acute serous may form spontaneously or form an upper respiratory infection – chronic form of serous otitis media could be caused by the overgrowth of adenoidal tissue or chronic sinus infections – if blocked, it prevents proper drainage of the tube and bacteria can accumulate
Etiology for Otitis Media
The supportive form is caused by the introduction of bacteria into the
Middle ear
Variations in the pharyngotympanic tube can predispose someone to
Otitis Media
A sensation of fullness or pressure in the ear - possibly hearing inpairment
Serous (signs and symptoms)
Pain in the affected area accompanied by typical symptoms of infection, such as fever, chills, nausea
Suppurative (signs and symptoms)
Examination with otoscope will reveal bulging tympanic membrane - fluid bubble may be obseved behind a reddened tympanic membrane
Diagnosis of Otitis Media
Antibiotics to eliminate bacteria in suppurative form – analgesics to relieve pain - in extreme cases, a tube is inserted into the tympanic membrane
Treatment for Otitis Media
Creating a hole in the tympanic membrane
drainage by myringtom
