Insufficient quantity of thyroid tissue or loss of function thyroid tissue – loss of functional thyroid tissue may be iatrogenic: often is idiopathic but is suspected to be an autoimmune disorder
Etiology of Hypothyroidism
Newborns may exhibit constipation and feeling problems, sleep too much – retarded growth, delay of secondary sex characteristics, impaired intelligence
Signs and Symptoms of Hypothyroidism
Onset in adult is often
Insidious
fatigue, muscle cramps, menorrhagia (heavy period)
Initial adult symptoms include
may exhibit expressionless face and sparse hair
Advanced cases
Complete array of signs and symptoms – Radioimmunoassay can reveal low hormone levels
