An episodic severe headache lasting 4 to 72 hours

Is often unilateral, throbbing and worsens with exertion – light, sound and odor sensitivity – aura may appear in 25 % of cases

Thought to be neurovascular syndrome with altered CNS processing that triggers neuropeptide release that in turn causes painful inflammation of cranial blood vessels and dura mater

Eliminate triggers such as drinking wine, skipping meals, sleep deprivation – fluctuating estrogen levels are a potent migrane trigger, oral contraceptives occasionally trigger or worsen migranes – acetaminophen, triptans (constricts the blood vessels in the brian to relieve inflammation)
