Seizures Flashcards
List the steps for the Seizures procedure
- Call for the nurse and stay with the resident.
- Place padding under head and move furniture away from the resident.
- Do not restrain the resident or place anything in the mouth. Assist the nurse with placing the resident on their side.
- Loosen the resident’s clothing, especially around the neck.
- Note the duration of the seizure and the areas involved.
What is the rationale for step “1. Call for the nurse and stay with the resident.”?
Allows you to get help, yet continuously provide for the resident’s safety and comfort.
What is the rationale for step “2. Place padding under head and move furniture away from the resident.”?
Protects the resident from injury.
What is the rationale for step “3. Do not restrain the resident or place anything in the mouth. Assist the nurse with placing the resident on their side.”?
Any restriction may injure the resident during the seizure. Positioning the resident on their side prevents choking if the resident should vomit.
What is the rationale for step “4. Loosen the resident’s clothing, especially around the neck.”?
Prevents injury or choking.
What is the rationale for step “5. Note the duration of the seizure and the areas involved.”?
Provides the nurse with necessary information to properly assess the resident’s condition and needs.
