Assist With Cane Flashcards

1
Q

List the steps of the Assist With Cane procedure.

A
  1. Do the initial steps procedure.
  2. Check the cane for the presence of the rubber tip(s).
  3. Assist the resident to sit on the edge of the bed.
  4. Assist the resident to stand on the count of three.
  5. Allow the resident to gain balance. Check for dizziness.
  6. Have the resident place the cane approximately 4 inches to the side of their stronger/unaffected foot. The height of the cane should be level with the resident’s hip.
  7. Stand to the affected side and slightly behind the resident.
  8. Have the resident move the cane forward about 4-6 inches, and step forward with the weak/affected leg to a position even with the cane. Then have the resident move the strong leg forward and beyond the weak leg and cane. Repeat the sequence.
  9. Do the final steps procedure.
