Assist Resident to Move to Head of Bed Flashcards
List the steps in the Assis Resident to Move to Head of Bed procedure
- Do initial steps procedure. Ask another CNA to assist you if needed.
- Lower the head of the bed and lean the pillow against the head board. Adjust the bed height as needed.
- Ask the resident to bend their knees, putting their feet flat on the mattress.
- Place one arm under the resident’s shoulder blades and the other arm under the resident’s thighs. If a draw sheet or pad is under the resident, two caregivers should grasp the sheet or pad firmly, with the trunk centered between the hands.
- Ask the resident to push with their feet on count of three.
- Place the pillow under the resident’s head.
- Do the final steps procedure.
What is the rationale for step “2. Lower the head of the bed and lean the pillow against the head board. Adjust the bed height as needed.”?
When the bed is flat, the resident can be moved without working against gravity. The pillow prevents injury should the resident hit the head of the bed. Adjusting the bed height decreases the risk of injury.
What is the rationale for step “3. Ask the resident to bend their knees, putting their feet flat on the mattress.”?
Gives the resident leverage to help with the move.
What is the rationale for step “4. Place one arm under the resident’s shoulder blades and the other arm under the resident’s thighs. If a draw sheet or pad is under the resident, two caregivers should grasp the sheet or pad firmly, with the trunk centered between the hands.”?
Putting your arm under the resident’s neck could cause injury. Use of a draw sheet/pad causes less stress on a caregiver and reduces the risk of injury.
What is the rationale for step “5. Ask the resident to push with their feet on count of three.”?
Enables the resident to help as much as possible and reduces the strain on you.
What is the rationale for step “6. Place the pillow under the resident’s head.”?
Provides for the resident’s comfort.
