Seizures Flashcards
What are the 2 major seizure classifications?
- Partial
2. Generalized
What are the 2 types of seizures under partial?
- Simple
2. Complex
What are the 5 types of seizures under generalized?
- Mytonic
- Absence
- Atonic
- Tonic
- Tonic-Clonic
What are the 5 seizure drugs?
- Phenytoin
- Carbamazepine
- Ethosuximide
- Diazepam/Valium
- Valproic Acid
What type of drug is phenytoin?
A potent anti-epileptic
Which drug is related TCA’s?
carbamazepine
Which drugs is an anti-convulsant?
Diazepam/Valium
What are the 2 categories of drugs used for seizures?
- anti-convulsants (stop seizures)
2. anti-epileptics (prevent seizures)
What is a myotonic seizure?
rapidly switching between contraction/relaxation of muscle tone
short, shock-like and brief
What is a absence seizure?
NO convulsions
patient = conscious
usually children/teens
What is an atonic seizure?
Without muscle tone (complete lack of muscle tone)
aka, “drop seizure” or “drop attack”
patient falls/
What is a tonic seizure
Increased muscle tone, stiffness
patient = usually conscious
What is a tonic-clonic seizure?
begins like a partial-simple but rapidly spreads to produce abnormal electrical discharges in both hemisphere of the brain
What is another name for a tonic-clonic?
Grand-Mal
What is dangerous about status epilpeticus?
brain damage from continual electrical discharge
