Parkinson's Flashcards
What are the 3 Parkinson’s drugs used to alleviate symptoms?
- Bromocriptine
- levodopa
- carbidopa
How do these drugs work?
- increase dopamine levels
2. block cholinergic transmission
What it the physiological cause of parkinsons?
damage to the dopaminergic neurons so they release less dopamine
What is the effect of less dopamine?
There is more Ach activity
What are the 2 nuerotransmitters that help regulate normal acitivty of nerves that control voluntary skeletal muscle movement?
- Dopamine
2. Ach
What does dopamine do?
Inhibit activity and decrease muscle tone
What does Ach do?
excitatory stimulation and increase muscle tone
What are the symptoms of Parkinsons?
- bradykinesia
- rigidity
- abnormal reflexes
- tremors at rest
- drooling
Which drug is an anticholinergic?
Bromocriptine
What is the MOA of levodopa and carbidopa?
inhibit reuptake of dopamine
