3 Drugs Main Treatment for Partial (Simple and Complex) and Tonic Clonic Seizures
Phenytoin, Carbam, Valproate
Tx for Absence
Ethosuximide
Tx for Status Epilepticus
Benzos
Tx That’s Usually an adjunct for other seizure meds, also maybe for neuralgias/peripheral neuropathies
Gabapentin
5 Common SFX For Almost All
Diplopia, sedation, ataxia, nystagmus, dizziness
6 Other Phenytoin SFX
Gingival hyperplasia Hirsutism Fetal hydantoin syndrome (cleft lip/palate/congenital heart defects, MR) SLE-like syndrome Induction of cytochrome P450 SJS
3 Teratogens
Phenytoin, Carbam, Valproate (causes spina bifida, need even more folate)
Causes SJS (5 anti-seizures and 3 others)
Ethosuximide, Lamotrigine, Carbamazepine, Phenytoin, Phenobarbital
Also sulfonamides, PCNs, and allopurinol
5 That Cause Agranulocytosis (not necessarily anti-seiz)
Carbam, cloazapine, colchicine, PTU and methimazole (antithyroids)
2 Hepatotoxic
Valproic acid and carbamazepine
6 (not necessarily anti-seiz) that Induce Cyt P450
Phenytoin, Rifampin, St Johns Wort, Barbiturates, Griseofulvin, Carbamazepine
5 That Block Na Channels
Phenytoin, Carbam, valproate, topiramate, lamotrigine
8 That Potentiate GABA
Valproate, phenobarbital, benzos, gabapentin, topiramate, levetiracetam, tiagabine, vigabatrin
