Hypothalamus Flashcards
Supraoptic nucleus
Makes ADH, if damaged get neurogenic diabetes insipidus
Paraventricular nucleus
Makes oxytocin
Lateral area
Hunger. If desroyed can get anorexia/FTT. Inhibited by leptin
Ventromedial area
Satiety. DESTRUCTION (e.g. craniopharyngioma) leads to hyperphagia/savage behavior. Stimulated by leptin.
Anterior hypothalamus
Cooling, parasympathetic. If destroyed hyperthermia
Posterior hypothalamus
Heating, sympathetic. If destroyed poikilotherm (cold-blooded)
Suprachiasmatic nucleus
Master clock/controls circadian rhythm. Receives input from retina
Preoptic area
Releases GnRH
Dorsomedial nucleus
Controls GI. See savage behavior/obesity when STIMULATED
Mamillary body
receives input from hippocampus and lesioned in Wernicke
Arcuate nucleus
Releases hormones affecting ant pit - DA, GHRH, some hunger/satiety effects too
