Aphasias Flashcards
Broca’s Aphasia
Motor speech. Nonfluent aphasia with intact comprehension and impaired repetition
Wernicke’s Aphasia
Associative auditory cortex. Fluent aphasia with impaired comprehension and repetition
Conduction aphasia
Damage to arcuate fasciculus (which connects Wernicke and Broca areas). Poor repetition but fluid speech and intact comprehension
Global aphasia
Both affected. Nonfluent aphasia with impaired comprehension
Transcortical motor aphasia
Nonfluent aphasia with good comprehension and intact repetition
Transcortical sensory aphasia
Poor comprehension with fluent speech and intact repetition
Mixed transcortical aphasia
Broca and Wernicke involved but not arcuate fasciculus. Nonfluent speech, poor comprehension, but intact repetition
Nondominant aphasias
Broca’s or Wernicke’s damage on non-dominant side (ipsilateral side as dominant handedness)
Broca: Expressive dysprody - inability to express emotion or inflection in speech
Wernicke: Can’t comprehend emotion or inflection
