secularisation Flashcards
what ways does jose casanova define secularisation?
decline
seperation
privatisation
what does secularisation mean?
the idea that since we have become so advanced in society through the development of science religion should be abandoned and be considered superstitious. It can even suggest that religious belief is infantile and primitive.
what are the two branches of secularism?
programmatic
procedural
what is programmatic secularism?
religion has no place in the public sphere and is not the concern of the government. Any person should keep their beliefs private.
what is procedural secularism?
This acknowledges the complex mixture of faiths found within society and the unjustness of Christianity having a higher place. All views should be treated equally and we should not give any priority to one group.
what did Auguste Comte think?
civilised societies develop from three things; theological, mystical and positive.
Religion should give way to secular positivism and science to remove all false beliefs of the world
What was feurbachs theory?
Projection
what is projection theory?
ideals of God are manmade through humans values that are projected into the cosmos
For example, society values power - God is powerful.
He believed religion will die out as our secular beliefs will stop the projection of God.
God changes overtime due to human change
What did David Hume contribute to secularisation?
Our natural fear of our unknown existence gives way to belief in powerful deities that are a means of protection.
Hume quote about religious belief
’ you will scarcely be persuaded that they are other than sick mens dreams’
Stephen Frys stance on secularisation
The Christian God is nonsensical - it doesnt resemble human qualities in any form and would not make sense for us to bow down to him
Karl marx view on religion
- it exists to oppress working classes
- it keeps them subdued and in line for the bourgeoise
- religion prevents social change through creating a false consciousness in which suffering is seen as virtouous
how could projecting belief in the afterlife have a capitalist agenda?
encourages people to live with injustice because their suffering in this life is a ‘soul making process’ for the next life in which they will be rewarded. (summum bonnum sorry kant)
what did marx think would set a decline in religious belief?
control by workers will lead to religious change
what did marx compare religion to?
a drug - that keeps the proletariat subdued
marx quote
religion is the opium of the people
