section 6: part 1 Flashcards
what nerves are involved in the jaw reflex?
the afferent & the efferent tracks of cr. nerve 5
if a person has nystagmus bilaterally, what can you assume?
that it is a medial cerebellum problem
what cranial nerve nuclei are evident on the basis of the pons?
- vestibulo-cochlear 8
- facial 7
- abducens 6
- trigem 5
on which side (ventral or dorsal) do you see the cerebellar puduncles?
the dorsal side
what marks the caudal boundary of the pons?
a line across the 4th ventricle at its widest point connecting the two vestibular areas
what marks the rostral boundry of the pons?
narrowing of the ventricle into the cerebral aqueduct
what is the function of the middle cerebral puduncle?
cortex–>pons–>cerebellum
superior cerebellar puduncle function?
axons in the deep cerebellar nuclei–>red nucleus, va/vl of thalamus, reticular formation of the pons
what are the 4 deep nuclei of the cerebellum?
- fastigial
- globose
- emboliform
- dentate
what type of functions does the pontine reticular formation control?
eye movements
sleep
arousal
what 3 nuclei can be seen on an image of the caudal section of pons?
vestibular nuclei
abducens nucleus
facial nucleus
what is the facial colliculus?
the genus of the facial nerve (loop of facial nerve axons) that loops over the abducen’s nucleus
what does the raphe nucleus do?
it has serotonergic projections throughout the forebraine & it modulates responses of the hypothalamus & cerebral neurons
