Section 5- Boles Flashcards

1
Q

Why do they stand on Ibral and Marka and why on that particular part of the body?

A

Standing on the chest of Ibral and Marka, Khan and Larbi shout rhymic boles at an incredibly fast pace. This makes the audience feel uncomfortable and createsa very tense situation. The way they are standing on the chest of the casts could represent how they feel they have a weight on their chests. The cousin wouldn’t allow Khan to help on the train and he was told to supress his emotions. It could also reflect the creative process of creating the casts.

Q

Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation.

A

The two dancers walk towards each other continuing to shout boles. They end facing eachother just towards stage right. It has a very aggressive and forceful dynamic.

This increases the intensity and exposing nature of shouting at eachother. The tension is increasing like how the tension is increasing with the guards.

Q

Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation.

A

Larbi shoots his left hand in a horizontal pathway to end past Khan’s face. Khan turns his face away as if reacting to it.

This leads in to a series of chops and blocks. This shows how everytime Khan tried to help in the situation, he’s blocked firstly by his cousin and then by the authority.

Q

Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation.

A

Khan swipes his arm across the horizontal plane. Larbi hyperextends his back to get out of the way of the swipe. This happens in a suspended, almost slow motion dynamic.

This is a feature of capoeira and martial arts. You can tell it is that style because the movement goes through eachothers personal space, a controlled movement, non-contact martial arts.

Q

Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation.

A

Khan catches the arm of Larbi and drags him to downstage right.

This is refective of the way that Khan was ordered around by his cousin and the guards and how he witnessed the guards drag the dead body off the train.

Q

Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation.

A

Khan crouches down and performs a swift sweep of the leg in the horizontal plane underneath Larbi. Larbi calls out and stamps his legs and flicks the wrists upwards.

This replects the capoeira style sweep and calling out from other martial arts. Raw emotion for the situation that he was confronted with showing how the story informs the movement.

It is then developed. Khan places his hands on the floor and swipes the leg backwards over the top of Larbi’s head.

Walking towards downstage left, Larbi steps out sideways with his right leg. Khan then steps out with his left leg in front of Larbi’s. This is then repeated multiple times.

They are preventing eachother from advancing any further. Could represent how the cousin keeps preventing Khan from speaking out

A

Khan is stood up downstage towards stage right and larbi is crouched down towards stage left. On a sharp note in the music, they swap places.

A

Larbi performs a series of forwards kicks towards stage left pinning Khan against the stage left gauze. He does three of these kicks with the fourth one ending on Khan’s shoulder. This os a very swift, sharp and direct in the use of space.

Khan was unable to do anything much like he wasn’t able to do anything on the train.

Q

Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation.

A

Khan and Larbi are stood centre stage either side of the centre line. They are locked in a head butting position, heads touching and arms locked.

This represents the conflict over his own self conscious. Represents what he should do vs what you can do. Could also represent the two sides of their identity clashing.
