Section 11- Train Tatkar Flashcards
Describe the transition into the section. How/why do you think this is?
The focus is on Larbi. Khan goes over to Larbi and follows him to upstage right and then towards stage left. This blurrs the boundaries between when the section ends and the next one starts.
What choreographic device is used more in this section and why?
Unison is used heavily used as it helps to show the shared experience of the story that Khan has let Larbi in to. It also helps to increase the volume of the footwork and the intensity of the rhythms. The way that they are moving together also shows they parallel tracks of the train.
Explain the movement this picture represents and include the aural setting. Why do they hold up their trousers?
The aural setting is the pizacarto plucking of the strings. The dancers are stood side by side. They then hold up their trousers so you can see their feet and their footwork. The dancers perform a gentle stepping behind and to the side, leading with the heels of the feet.
Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation.
Travelling from downstage, left of centre, to downstage, right of centre, in a semi circular pathway with Khan on the right. The dancers perform a repeated sequence of stamp step scuff pause. The stamps are quite forceful and the scuff light in comparison.
This creates the sound and feeling of an old steam train just setting of and gaining speed. The way that the dancers travel side by side also helps to create the idea of the train tracks.
Explain the movement this picture represents. How is it developed?
The dancers perform a crawl sequence in unison with their left foot to the side, heel toe heel and scrape back in. This is repeated befor the rhythm is built upon. The dancers add in a heel beat with their right foot so the sequence is core complex. They then also develop it by changing the rhythm and which sounds have the emphasis.
What is tatkar? How does this picture represent it?
Tatkar is the rhymic sequence of footwork that uses different parts of the foot to create different sounds. This picture shows the dancers using the different parts of their feet.
Explain the significance of the diagonal pathway that Khan stravels along.
Khan begins by standing in front of Ibral, downstage left. He then suddenly ‘scurries’ away traveling along the diagonal to upstage right. This could represent the way that Khan wanted to escape from the station master to avoid the balme for the dead body.
Explain the movement this picture represents and the aural setting.
Larbi is stood towards upstage right facing the musicians. On each ting of the bell, Larbi performs a sufi turn. This is an example of music visualisation.
Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation.
Khan and Larbi are stood upstage right facing downstage left. Khan repeatedly taps Larbi on the shoulder and points at Marka who is on the floor, downstage centre. This shows his distress at seeing the dead body and his want to help. Khan is almost begging his cousin to let him do something.
Explain the movement this picture represents and the music dance relationship.
Stood upstage right, Khan is facing the audience and Larbi is facing upstage. The dancers travel towards eachother performing a sequence of tatkar using a call and response relationship.
Explain the movement this picture represents and where it has been seen before.
Larbi travels along the diagonal performing a large tap step sequence almost as if in a daze. His head is down as if he just needs to get on with it. His hand is continually flipping over as if showing that life is constantly in motion. Khan moves behind and in front of Larbi trying to join in but not being able to. Eventually he takes huge steps in the same way, traveling completely to downstage left.
It has been seen in section 5 to show how the cousin wouldn’t allow Khan to act how he wanted to.
Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation.
Khan slides down almost in to splits and on to his stomach. He then repeatedly stands up and falls down in different ways
- on to one knee
- up, spin and in to a pressup position
- horizontal jump from pressup to land through pressup to his stomach
This could show how he is being forced to conform to the cultural expectations. Also coud suggest that mortality is inevitable.
Why does Khan get himself in to this position? What is Larbi doing?
This is the recovery position. He now looks the same as Marka and blurs the boundaries between when is someone part of the physical setting and when are they the performers. Another seemless transition.
Larbi continues to perform bourees en pointe to show how the train keeps on moving and therefore how life keeps moving on.
