Section 10- Khan speaks about his experience Flashcards

1
Q

Why is the delivery of text different to previous sections?

A

Only Khan is speaking because it is his story and he is sharing what he learnt. Larbi acts out the story quite theatrically and then adds a comedic and informal element to lighten up the seriousness of what is Khan is talking about.

Q

What does this picture show? Why?

A

Larbi is taking off his shoes and socks. This corresponds with Khan talking about the hotel so could represent him physically arriving at the hotel and making himself comfortable by taking off his shoes. Could also be in preparation for the next section.

Q

Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation.

A

Larbi holds up his trousers and starts to rock on to the different parts of the foot. This could represent how he is finding his feet in a new style of dance (Kathak)

Q

Explain what is going on at this moment of Zero Degrees

A

Khan has just started to notice Khan walking round like a chicken and says “What are you doing? I’m trying to tell a story”. This shows how Khan is a storyteller through both his words and his movement. He breaks the fourth wall which adds comedy and lightens the mood

Q

What effect is created by the juxtaposition of Khan’s verbal communication with Larbi’s movement?

A

Khan is talking about very serious matters of life and death and the realisation that it is universal and that he isnt superior. This is a very deep and serious subject matter. In contrast, Larbi is perfroming very abstract meaningless movement which provides the audience with something else to focus on.

Q

How do the audience react?

A

When Khan breaks the fourth wall the audience laughs. It is needed after the serious nature of section 8 and 9. It would feel very intense without it.
